Now that I have a skiff again it’s time for more goon reports! You’re excited, I can tell. I went out to the Indian River Lagoon (IRL) on Friday of last week after the 4th of July. What a mistake that was. Horrible water quality, no fish, 15mph winds, and nasty chop made for a horrible horrible day. Come to think of it, the IRL has never really produced for me as well as mosquito has. Allot of people who use live bait do well in the IRL…but oh well. Mosquito for the summer it is!
The fish are back to their summer patterns in the lagoon. The water is super low right now (or the sea grass is really high?) and you can see fish tailing on the edge of these exposed flats. We found no less than 50 fish this weekend and it was no trouble getting them in on spin gear; fly fishing was a different story. It was amateur hour for me on fly, you need big lead eyes to punch through the thick weeds right now. Between that and the bonefish-style disappearing acts the redfish seem to have down to a ‘T’, I resorted to poling my girl around all day and let her have all the fun.
